The bathukama festival of Telangana is a centuries old autumn festival which emphasises the importance of life of women. This “Bathukamma – mother of life” represented in a mound of flowers signifies life, death and rebirth invested with the spirit of goddesses Lakshmi and Gouri. Though not worshipped daily Bathukama remains a sacred presence for women as she represents the fullness of life that autumn brings with it a variety of flowers, signalling hope for the renewal of nature and humanity.
VJIT has been celebrating bathukama festival every year with the same sacred fervour, seeking the blessings of the goddesses. Every year each department brings in their bathukama arranged with different and unique flowers stacked beautifully in concentric layers in the same of a temple gopuram. Each department takes it very prestigiously to create their Bathukamma the best of all, displaying a healthy and happy competitive devotion.
We arrange all the beautiful Bathukamas in the centre of the lush green lawn and all the VJIT women and girls attired in colourful traditional wear, sing and dance around the goddesses.
The bathukama festival is one big celebration that all the ladies and girls not only at VJIT but throughout the state await eagerly to take part in the musical festival. The festivity at VJIT had begun much prior to the big day. We could see our young beautiful, full of life ladies and girls moving to the tunes of the folklore for the past one week practicing to synchronize to the rhythm of music, to make the big day bigger.
