Department of Mathematician Humanities and Sciences organized a guest lecture programme in memory of Srinivasa Ramanujan’s birthday on 22 Dec 2014. Prof K.Kuppuswamy Rao, former rector of Dr. B.R. Ambedkar Open University gave a lecture on “Applications of Differential Equations” for the Engineering students. Prof Kuppu Swamy Rao highlighted about the first paper of Ramanujan entitled “Some properties of Bernoulli numbers” appeared in 1911 in the Journal of the Indian Mathematical society. Highlighted that Ramanujan as the first research scholar of Madras University and about his contributions & research in the area of mathematics. He spoke about his important paper entitled “Highly Composite Numbers” appeared in the Journal of London Mathematical Society in 1915 which was 62 pages long and contains 269 equations. In 1918 he was elected Fellow of the Royal Society of London. Dr. S. Chandrasekhar the Nobel Laureate and renowned Astrophysicist wrote “As long as people do mathematics, the work of Ramanujan will continue to be appreciated.”
He also motivated the students in the career opportunities available in Mathematics. He urged the students to show interest towards research in mathematics. After the lecture there was an interactive session, Director Dr. P. Venugopal Reddy and Principal Dr.A.Padmaja of VJIT delivered speech on Ramanujan’s contributions in Mathematics. Vote of thanks was given by the Convener Dr.D.Raju Department of Mathematics.
